Holy Spirit’s student government serves as a liaison between the students and the administration. In addition, they conduct service activities such as collections for Grains of Hope. The government consists of four elected officers - President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. Each class from grades 4 to 8 also elects a representative and an alternate. The class representatives present suggestions from the student body to the student government and convey information to the students. Elections are held in the fall.
Forensics is open to students in grades 5-8. We proudly sponsor a Varsity and a Junior Varsity team. Forensics is an art of public speaking and speechmaking. Students learn to speak dramatically and feel comfortable reading in front of a crowd. The Club meets weekly during the months of September to November and again from February through April, when preparing for competitions. There are two competitions in which the Holy Spirit Forensics Club participates. These are held at schools within the diocese that also have Forensics teams. Students who join Forensics not only become more comfortable speaking publicly, but also make new friends within the club.
The Chess Club meets weekly after school under the guidance and supervision of Mrs. Kiss. The club is for students in grades 2-8, beginners and experts alike. Beginners learn the basics, like the names of pieces, how they can move, and some strategies. Those already proficient in the game challenge one another.
This special program is designed for students in grades 6-8. During lunch and recess times, the Patrols become helpers to their younger peers and are assigned to assist the teacher on duty in keeping a watchful eye on the younger population of the school. Their dedication, responsibility and kindness are seen as a service within the school and a part of their Religion grade. The program also promotes the development of leadership skills and good citizenship qualities.
